This is a good time to mention that you should never EVER open up programs that people send to you via email unless you're expecting it and you know what it is. Refusing to open those sorts of attachments is one of the most important steps you can't take toward remaining virus-free on your computer. The other immensely important step is to keep your computers up-to-date with all patches and updates.

I would also recommend free anti-virus software like AVG or Avast. Those are arguably better than the commercial alternatives and the home user versions are free.
