Did you know that endurance exercise like durational running, biking, and jogging puts your body in distress mode by Al Sears, MD.

Endurance training forces your heart and lungs to supply energy at continuous, low output, at relatively slow speed, for a long time. Long duration exercises tells your body to store more Eeker fat in order to meet the unnatural caloric demands you’re placing on it by running all those miles. So when your body’s at rest, it’s busy getting Eeker fatter, not leaner.

This type of exercise also puts your body in distress mode. It releases the stress hormone cortisol, which actually boosts triglyceride blood levels and cholesterol oxidation – both things that can clog your arteries and cause heart attacks. Cortisol also lowers serum testosterone and growth hormone levels, which can lead to depression, decreased muscle mass, and clouded thinking.

A groundbreaking study of long-distance runners found that after a workout, “bad” cholesterol and triglyceride levels increased and threw blood-clotting factors off-balance, increasing inflammation and clotting incidence. These are both signs of Eeker heart distress and precursors to heart attack.

Smiler What you should focus on are high-intensity, short duration exercise routines. These mimic the natural physical demands our pre-historic ancestors confronted every day. Sudden, explosive bursts of speed – to escape danger or capture prey – gave them lean, fit bodies.

You know I thought to myself I need to lose a few. So I started doing squats, 40 at a clip. takes maybe a minute but a good expenditure of energy for that minute. I think it's starting to show after a week. I look a little leaner but haven't weighed myself. We'll see.

Microwave popcorn alert

Do you know how difficult it sometimes is to stay Smiler positive whatever the news the Eeker things they do with food. But .....I will persevere Smiler YEH !

Microwave popcorn has seemed like a relatively harmless snack, but lately there have been some news reports that question whether that's really so. The scariest Eeker one links microwave popcorn to an illness called bronchiolitis obliterans, a potentially fatal lung disease. Several workers in popcorn factories have died from it while others were in need of lung transplants. That's bad enough, and in fact, there have been lawsuits filed for hundreds of factory workers -- but last year, the problem reached consumers, too, when the condition (also called "popcorn lung") was diagnosed in a 53-year-old consumer who'd eaten several bags of popcorn a day for years.

Eeker POISON VAPORS
Animal studies have shown that inhaling vapors produced in the manufacturing process for microwave popcorn, in particular those from the butter flavoring, is damaging to the airways, I learned from David Michaels, PhD, MPH, a research professor and associate chairman of the department of environmental and occupational health at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Dr. Michaels has been studying the issue for four years and has led the pack in bringing attention to the dangers. He explained that a harmful chemical called diacetyl (2,3-butanedione) is released when the artificial butter flavoring is heated. Interestingly, diacetyl also is released when heating real butter, but in far lower, nontoxic amounts. The same holds true for popcorn with artificial butter flavoring prepared other ways, too.

Frowner BAGS BAD, TOO
If you're thinking the solution is to develop a taste for the unbuttered version of microwave popcorn, think again. The other news report I'd heard was about the bags in which the popcorn is cooked. The grease-resistant coating inside the bags is manufactured with fluorinated chemicals called telomers that, when heated, break down into C8, which is considered a possible carcinogen. (For more on the dangers of these chemicals, see Daily Health News, April 21, 2005.) This is the chemical used in nonstick cookware and a study done in part by an FDA researcher found that levels of chemical concentrations from popcorn bags were sometimes much higher than in the cookware. The Ohio Department of Health's Bureau of Environmental Health also says these chemicals can be found in fast food containers such as French fry boxes.
Big Grin WHAT TO EAT?
Some of the nation's biggest producers of microwave popcorn (ConAgra Foods, General Mills, American Pop Corn Company and Weaver Popcorn Company) have already changed their recipes and removed diacetyl from their microwave popcorn formulas. Dr. Michaels urges caution nonetheless: "They are replacing diacetyl with other chemicals that have not been adequately tested," he warned. Additionally, removing the diacetyl does not address the risks of the fumes from the bag's grease-resistant coating. Dr. Michaels advises sticking with popcorn that has no artificial flavors.
"Air popped popcorn remains perfectly safe for consumers," he told me. Miss the butter flavor? Try putting a little bit of real butter on the popcorn once it's popped.

ah ja, for me investigating the ingredients list for toxic stuff is far too time consuming so have a simplified approach:

whenever its a new&improved foodproduct its probably crap. Big Grin
Regarding shampoos etc: when its a brand that has lots and lots of different smells/flavours, there is probably crap in there.

might miss out one or two products that are and good, but i can live with that Smiler

Did you know when people say "It's a fact" they are really sure this or this is so..... they actually say "made up" for the word "fact" comes from the Latin word "In Factum" meaning "made up".

Found this peace of info in the book "Matrix Energetics".

Is'nt life Funny? All the time we listened to teachers etc and beleived it was all true when they said It's a Fact.

Did you know that fruit sliced , refrigerated hardly looses it's nutritional value? I did not.

by Dr. Alan Inglis
I've always been skeptical of the claims that refrigerating fruit can decrease its nutritional value -- and with good reason, as it turns out.
In a recent study, scientists wanted to see whether fresh fruit lost any of its antioxidants (including vitamin C, carotenoids, and phenols) when it was sliced and refrigerated in containers that weren't completely airtight for just a few days.
For nine days the researchers examined the fruit, rating it by its visual appeal and remaining nutrients. And even though some of the fruit looked spoiled, the nutrient levels turned out to be just fine -- holding on to the majority of their antioxidant power for nearly a week.
Mangos, strawberries, and watermelon held out the longest, losing only 5 percent of their vitamin C after six days. Pineapple came in second at 10 percent, kiwi at 12 percent, and cantaloupe at 25. And, in fact, the levels of carotenoids in the mango and watermelon actually increased because of the exposure to light. (Light actually stimulates cells in these fruits to produce more of these substances.)
Smiler So go ahead and make yourself a big fruit salad this Sunday and enjoy it with your lunch or as a snack throughout the week.

Did you know ? ALLERGIES

that the right fruits and vegetables that can help you get rid of Eeker allergies?
It’s allergy season, and I’m seeing a lot of you suffering from sneezing, sniffling, runny nose, and watery, itchy eyes. The problem is that even if you’re getting relief from the usual allergy drugs, you’re replacing one set of problems with another—and the consequences can be serious.
That’s because most of these medications aren’t good for you. Today I’ll show you a safe, natural way to beat allergies.
Both over-the-counter and prescription allergy drugs come with a host of side effects that pose serious health risks.

You may have experienced some of them, including:
Drowsiness
“Brain fog”
Rapid or irregular heartbeat
High blood pressure
Constipation
Dry mouth
Short-term memory loss
Urine retention
Erectile dysfunction
Muscle spasms
Kidney and liver damage
Blurred vision

Smiler Fighting allergies doesn’t have to be this unpleasant—or dangerous.
The secret behind Nature’s remedy lies in three natural compounds: bromelain, quercetin, and vitamin C. Bromelain comes from the roots of the pineapple tree. Quercetin is plentiful in all kinds of plants, including apples, berries, broccoli, squash, and some nuts and seeds. And of course many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C.

Even though there have been plenty of studies proving their effectiveness, this “triple threat” has slipped under modern medicine’s radar screen. I’ve been using them with great success in my practice for years.
Think of allergies as a kind of mistake. They happen because things like dust, pollen, or stuff in animal fur trick your immune system into thinking it’s under attack (that’s why the symptoms of colds and allergies can be so similar—they’re your body’s way of responding to a foreign invader).
But if you have an allergy to them, your body kicks into gear anyway. Special cells in the blood vessel linings of the inner eyelids, nasal membranes, and lungs release substances called histamine and inflammatory prostaglandins. These are the real culprits behind all the misery. They release fluids and cause swelling to flush out what your body thinks is a viral or bacterial infection.

Smiler Quercetin targets the special cells that make histamine. Studies have shown that it not only prevents allergies before they start; it can stop allergic reactions in progress, even at doses as low as 1.5 micrograms. And it works instantly.
Smiler Bromelain partners up against allergic reactions in two different ways. It counteracts the effects of inflammatory prostaglandins, and also helps your body to absorb quercetin more efficiently.
Smiler Vitamin C adds two more allergy-fighting forces to help you fend off the sniffles. You probably already know about its immune-boosting benefits. It turns out it’s also a potent anti-histamine. It halts the production of histamine and speeds up the breakdown of histamine already in the blood. A 1992 study showed that taking two grams of vitamin C per day lowered histamine levels by 38 percent in healthy adults—after just one week.
What’s more, vitamin C and quercetin reinforce each other. Vitamin C makes quercetin last longer, and quercetin prevents vitamin C from breaking down.
You can find formulas that combine bromelain and quercetin on line or in health food stores. Follow the directions on the label, since the recommended amounts will vary depending on how severe your allergies are.
Add about 1,000 to 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day to get the full anti-allergy benefit.
To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

Did you know? Smiler Lemon treatment Prevention of kidney stones

An HSI member named John writes: "Forty-six years ago I was having to pass a kidney stone about once a month."

No doubt, that simple comment probably sends shivers down the spine of anyone who's endured the passing of a kidney stone. But John found a way to easily alleviate his problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Apples & honey
------------------------------------------------------------------

John states that the pain of passing each kidney stone was "excruciating." But then everything changed.

John: "I then read Dr. Jarvis's book 'Vermont Folk Medicine' talking about apple cider vinegar and honey being so beneficial to changing the PH of the body to prevent kidney stones. I immediately went on this regimen by taking a half bottle of honey and filling it up with apple cider vinegar. Then I put about an inch of this mixture in a glass and filled it up with water. I did this every morning since and have not had another stone in 46 years.

"Cheap treatment and I have recommended it to anyone that I talk to that has kidney stones and they all are helped."

Frowner John's remarkable success with this simple treatment sounded almost too good to be true, so I checked in with HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., to get his take, and he offered a word of caution: Frowner "The acetic acid in the vinegar has been used for centuries in folk medicine, and I have no doubt there's something to it. I see no problem with the regimen outlined other than one thing: honey is a highly refined (by the bees) carbohydrate, so anyone with blood sugar problems must be aware that even totally natural raw honey contains a heavy simple sugar load."

And I have this note to add about apple cider vinegar:
Frowner Avoid the typical ACV product that you'll find in most large grocery chains. Instead, look for raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, available at many health food stores. And as always, talk to your doctor before starting this or any other therapeutic regimen.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Lemon treatment
------------------------------------------------------------------
Prevention of kidney stones has been the topic of several previous e-Alerts.

In the e-Alert "Toxic Tub" (7/19/07), I told you about a small study in which 12 kidney stone patients who drank lemonade daily were followed for four years. Results showed that subjects formed fewer kidney stones and formed them at a slower rate during the time they drank lemonade. Over the four-year study period none of the subjects required medical treatment for their condition.

Smiler Lemon juice contains natural citrate, which helps prevent certain salts from forming kidney stones. Of course, your typical lemonade product presents the same problem that honey does: Frowner too much simple sugar.

Frowner And then there's the soy problem.
A few years ago I told you about a study in which researchers found extremely high oxalate contents in soybeans, tofu, and commercially processed soy products. Oxalate is a compound that binds with calcium in the kidneys and can lead to the formation of kidney stones. The American Dietetic Association recommends no more than 10 mg of oxalate per serving. In the study, soy cheese had the lowest amount of oxalate at 16 mg per serving, while textured soy protein contained an astounding 638 mg per serving.

Based on these figures, researchers concluded that soy products are unsafe for anyone at risk of developing kidney stones.

New fat fights chronic lung disease

Chronic lung disease is a growing problem in this country. And it's happening in people who don't smoke. It's hitting young and old alike. And it's hitting in a variety of ways. But whether it's asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, or chronic bronchitis, there's a cheap and easy way to treat it.

Researchers found that one particular omega-3 fatty acid improves ventilation in chronic lung disease. It's DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). They collected data from 593 adults in Germany. The data confirmed a negative association for lung function for the fatty acid pamitoleic acid (which comes from dietary saturated fat). At the same time, DHA has a positive effect on lung hyper-reactivity.

We've known for some time that fish oil can help these patients. But this study focused on DHA in particular. DHA is a marine omega 3. However, you don't have to take the marine variety to see results.

Unlike its counterpart EPA, you can get a vegetarian marine DHA. It goes by the name Neuromins. This DHA is extracted from sea algae. If you have chronic lung disease, you might want to give it a try, perhaps one capsule twice daily. You can find it in many health food stores and on the Internet. Please let me know how it does for you.

Yours for better health and medical freedom,
Robert Jay Rowen, MD
