Thought this was worth sharing:
This article was in the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper yesterday. It wasn't on the web site today so I will type part of it... Karan's nonprofit Urban Zen Foundation was responsible for creating the "wellness lounge," as part of the V-Day event staged by Eve Ensler, author of "The Vagina Monologues." Karan in recent years has become equally well known for her love of yoga, her exotic travels and her raw-food diet. Her late husban, Stephan Weiss, jokingly called it "her woo-woo stuff." Karan, though, credits yoga & meditation with helping her work through her grief over Weiss' death from cancer in 2001. When he was undergoing treatment, she brought in Eastern healing practitioners to aid in his care & comfort. Karan's dream is that everyone suffering from cancer & other serious illnesses has access to Eastern healing & Western medicine. "It shouldn't be an 'either or." It should be an 'and,' she said. That dream is slowly becoming a reality, as the Urban Zen Foundation & Beth Israel Medical Center in New York launch a pilot program that will offer to cancer patients some of the same services she brought to the Superdome. Yoga teachers trained as "integrative therapists" will do healing touch, breathing exercises & meditation coaching with cancer patients admitted to the hospital, said Dr. Woodson Merrell, chairman of the Dept of Integrative Medicine at Beth Israel. The goal is to eventually develop a national certification program that could be used at hospitals across the country. (For those who don't know who Donna Karan is, she is a famous clothes designer) Luv, Nita |
