I just responded to this in a rather long and rambling way, then my browser crashed before I had a chance to post, so perhaps Karma just stepped in and saved you all, so here's a condensed version.

I think that whether there is such a thing as Karma or not, living your life that way will tend to bring about the benefits. The nicer you are and the better attitude you have about things in life, from work, friends, family, health, the better the outcome usually is. Whether that is Karma or human nature I don't know. I like to think of it as the laws of the universe.

But we're all just guessing really. It's a great way to live though.

I believe in karma. If I plant a tomato seed, I get tomatoes. If I plant a daisy seed, I get daisies. If I smile at someone, I generally get a smile back. When I give someone a less than pleasant experience, I generally get back a less than pleasant experience. I believe all those examples follow a natural law of nature. We get what we give.

In practice, I've deliberately planted 'seeds' for things I've wanted. I was concerned during a divorce that I wouldn't be able to provide for myself and my children so I donated to a women and children's shelter. As it turns out, I never needed anyone else to provide my children and I shelter. I decided I wanted my own house so I donated to Habitat for Humanity. I'm living in my own house, purchased when prices were up; the price of this house wasn't up. Wink I'm not sure what I planted to get the wonderful, fabulous, incredible partner I have now but I clearly planted something wonderful, fabulous, and incredible. Big Grin

Karma also operates from lifetime to lifetime. For example, if you discriminate against some category of people during one lifetime, then you will have to live a life as one of those people sooner or later in order to understand the effects of your destructive actions during the earlier life. That is one way in which we increase in consciousness -- even if we do not seem to learn much during any one lifetime.
According to one theory, the Higher Self is the spirit that guides the sequence of lifetimes so that the several spirits "under" it continue to increase in consciousness. (One Higher Self to nine subordinate spirits, according to one version. But each of those "subs" have their own free will also, and they may chose their next lifetime according to their existing mindsets. But that would be counterproductive, of course, if that mindset is antisocial.) The whole system is rather complex. A good place to start learning about it is in the book "Our Ultimate Reality" by Adrian Cooper. I don't agrree with everything he writes, but it is a good starting point. There are many other sources of information, and even competing theories, of course.

Sometimes others' karma bumps into ours, I think. I hope I could tell the difference between tomato and watermelon seeds. I do love both regardless.... Big Grin

Yes, the law of attraction works -- always. That's why we need to be aware of it or we might attract what we don't want -- like maybe watermelons instead of tomatoes. Wink

Oh karma is soooo yesterday! Big Grin

You can choose to step out of karma if you want. Its nothing but a belief system. The chrstian-jewish-islamic religions have heaven and hell... so the buddists and hindus have karma. If someone feels guilty and in need of punishment... it will happen sooner or later. Better just to accept, forgive, let go and focus on what you really wish for yourself.
