I have been treated recently with acupuncture. I asked my OMD to open up my scar tissue area since I had surgery. Without asking me and he just assumed it was ok, he placed a NEEDLE into my chest THROUGH my robe that he gave me to wear. Is this a normal practice?

I did not let him continue because I felt what he was doing was not a clean practice. The robe he gave me to wear was clean by not sterile.

Has anyone heard of an OMD doing such a practice? Seems Strange to me.

Thank you in advance for any answer you might provide

Hi Risa,

Unfortunately, yes, I know of a few acupunturists who sometimes needle through clothing. Actually, the two I am thinking of are chiropractors; one learned acupuncture from a 5 month course in the orient. The other is also a licensed acupuncturist. But you are correct, this is not proper "clean needle technique", and most practitioners don't do it.

(The title OMD-oriental medicine doctor is only used in a couple of states. The rest use either licensed or registered acupuncturist.)

Thank you JodySmiler

I was hoping that you would respond. I am not going to go back.

There were two times, I shared extremely important discoveries that i had with him and he said it is all in your head. That is not an appropriate response to a discovery or to anyone who shares information.

Something tells me he has too many of his own issues. It is unfortuate because he has taught me some valuable things but there are too many negatives and when you do not trust someone who is putting needles into you, forget it.

Your answer was all I needed to hear. Thankfully, he just touched the skin but did not enter the area (or I hope so). Shame on him because he should have known better. He should have asked or explained what he was going to do first.
He does not even use a sharps container. He just puts the needles into the paakage they came in.

Thank you again
Risa
