I went down to Central Florida to visit my parents for New Years, and my mom's 78th birthday on Jan. 2nd. During my one and only QT session with her, I became somewhat overwhelmed (is that an oxymoron?).

Her main complaint is spasmodic torticollis - her head involuntarily turns to the left. Her neurologist told her that the cause is a chemical imbalance in her brain, so, after balancing her pelvis and occipital bones, I decided to stand behind her with my hands on each side of her head while she sat comfortably in a chair, and offered the energy to the center of her skull.

That went well for several minutes. When I placed on my hands on both sides of her neck, her head not only began to rotate severely to the left, it also began to flex toward her chest, so much that my right hand was getting scrunched between her jaw and collarbone. It was as if she was trying to listen to her necklace with her right ear! I had to move around to her right side and bend over slightly to keep my hands in position.

After several minutes without any noticeable improvement, and her complaints about pain in the left side of her neck (pointing to the posterior cervical aspect of her left upper traps which were now supporting the entire weight of her head), I moved my hands to that area, chasing the pain.

While I was working on her, I recalled all her issues: the torticollis, asthma/chronic bronchitis, hypoactive thyroid, very weak vocal chords (she speaks barely louder than a whisper), irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, arthritic hands, and she takes an Rx for her "nerves". That's only the first part of feeling overwhelmed.

My question is: Where do you direct the energy when someone has so many ailments? I've been in the medical profession for 38 years, so ONE of the benefits I like most about QT is that the body's own intelligence directs the energy where it's needed. I love the fact that I can set aside my evaluation and assessment skills and trust the process.

The second overwhelming part was trying to apply the "correct" techniques, using most of everything I've learned. I was placing the U-NAN pattern between my hands, offering copper for her neurological conditions, silver for her muscle spasms, and gold for her intestines. I was spinning chakras and placing my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter between my hands for the "what you love most" technique, and imagining a ball of energy spinning between my hands while they were on each side of her neck, all the while vortexing the energy with every breath. Whew! I was workin'!

The payoff was worth it. When she woke up the next morning, my mom said she didn't have any pain at all. COOL! Focusing more on what I was doing and what was happening within myself seemed to "distract" me from any desired outcome my ego was striving for. In the end, my efforts produced the desired results. Hmmm...another insight for my practitionership. Yay! (I've surpassed the hours, I just need to come up with a couple more insights).

Any comments, suggestions, or insights would be most appreciated. Thank you.

When a client arrives with so many problems I work on either 1) the problem that is, to them, the most problematic, or 2) where there is pain. If there is pain I always work that first (after adjusting the pelvis and occipital ridge). What I find is that once the area with pain is relieved they tend to have pain or discomfort in the next area of importance to be attended to. The other thing that is comforting is that the energy will go where it is most needed. So, even if your mother's neck problem was not the most "life threatening" the energy would then move to the area that was.

I would suggest that you relax more and enjoy the process. Focus on what you love most and allow the energy to do its work. Use the additional techniques to keep you engaged, not overwhelmed. Focus on one area at a time. By trying to focus on all her problems at once that could cause you to be very distracted from the actual process of allowing and running the energy itself.

In regards to your mother's severe head movement. That is not uncommon. Many people will experience an increase in their symptoms before the release. This can be pain, body movements, emotional release, etc. Just stay cool, continue to run the energy and follow them as best you can (like you did). These episodes are usually shortlived, although occasionally someone will have a release that lasts most of the session. Sometimes we will even have someone exaggerate the body movement, which seems to help the body to let go of it contraction. It sounds like your mother's neck did that on her own, though Smiler

You are doing fine. Just let go and flow with it more.

Hi Debra

I have experienced the body movement myself. I had (have) scoliosis and surgery when I was young (many years ago) and at the first workshop, as soon as they put their hand on my hips....wow......i didn't know I could twist like I did, almost like unscrewing! Since then, my husband has been working on my shoulders when I'm tense and once again, I do the spin thing. Its like my body loves to do it! Also,I find when I'm working on people, they also do the head thing like you mentioned. I find that it will go one way, then counteract by going the other. Once the moving is done, I'm done in that area.

Hi Deb Reid-- What you and the others were likely experiencing is called an "unwinding." Connective tissue called fascia is pervasive throughout the body and is completely interconnected--like a 3D body suit that goes through every bone, nerve, muscle and cell in the body. When trauma occurs (any trauma-emotional, physical, spiritual) fascia tends to tighten down and twist in order to protect the body from further harm- You probably noticed that yourself whenever you've been surprised or frightened-- We all tense up. Anyway, pain and dysfunction result when that fascia ends up not letting go after the trauma is over. So when we have bodywork done- massage or myofascial release etc or any energy technique- there is the potential for an unwinding--which is wonderful! It can last for a few moments or go on and on and on and on! If someone is working on you when this happens you will think they are moving your body and they will think you are voluntarily moving your body. Neither is true-- your fascia is unwinding and moving your body for you! Cool, huh? Also- emotional releases can occur at this time as the physical tissues also tend to store emotions. So when the physical body is released the emotions are freer to surface as well. Hope this info gives you some insight as to what has happened to you. Keep on unwinding! We're all like onions with many layers to get through! :0)

Hi,

Always remember to sweep and breathe so that you do not entrain.

The energy knows what to do. You can offer energy at the foot and if the pancreas needs it, eventually it will move to the pancreas! However, it would be more direct to go directly to the pancreas.

In my opinion, for multiple problems, start working on one problem, and when you feel the flow start to mellow, possibly then move to another area and start there..and continue to keep moving when you feel the energy ebb...You could also treat different areas during differen sessions. It sounds to me like you did an amazing job though!!!

Blessings,

Florida Girl

I want to thank all of you for sharing your views and experiences.

I've taken a couple of MFR courses, but Heidi-G reminded me of the unwinding process. Never having seen anyone unwind before makes perfect sense that I didn't recognize that my mother's neck was unwinding.

Thanks to the "Debs" and Florida Girl for the encouragement and observations that what I did was just fine. I've never worked on anyone with so many issues before my mom. The fact that she's had these ailments for so long combined with the knowledge that I was able to do only one hands-on session during my visit instilled a false sense of urgency, which simply fed the overwhelming feeling.

Thanks to all of you, and Richard's explanation of "allowing" in the Dec. 20th QT Newsletter, I'm finding it MUCH easier to step aside and trust not only the process, buy my own innate abilities as well.
