HEllo Fambly,

One of our students is devastated because her dog Rory had a soccer ball sized tumor and his spleen removed. They just found out it was malignant.

I think Courtney blames herself for not doing something sooner. She is very attuned to the dog. She said that she felt in January that there was something wrong with her dog but no one would listen to her in the family. finally he was having trouble breathing so they took him to the vet who sent him to a specialist.

This dog is very important to Courtney and she admits he has really helped her with her depression. She can get really debilitated with depression at times so we try to help her stay up. At the moment she is not able to concentrate on her school work as she is so upset about her dog. They think they may have gotten all the cancerous cells as it is not in the lymph nodes.

Rory is a lovely big bumbling Australian Water spaniel who has been to visit us at Outreach. He is like one of us.

Karen, Is the cancer hemangiosarcoma? If so, it's a huge advantage that they had his spleen removed before it ruptured. And did they notice whether it had metastasized elsewhere? That can make a huge difference.

This dog is very special to Courtney. Denise, Courtney hasn't been in this week, just phoned so haven't all the detail other than when she was in last week. Courtney said then that the tumor had grown onto the spleen, was attached.

Courtney struggles with ADD and depression and with all the cocktail of drugs they seem to give her. They throw her off, sleeping is a problem. It is really hard for her to function sometimes. She keeps plugging a long. She was telling me the other day how she was volunteering daily at the animal shelter working with the dogs. That is so good for Courtney and she can really communicate with them more easily than with kids her own age. She has a gift for being with animals and they know she cares about them.

It is a good thing they took the spleen as Denise says. They do well without a spleen. Hopefully, all will be well with Rory.

Courtney was in today and looked so sad. It is a rare kind of tumor and she couldn't remember the name. She said it is fast growing. Because they don't if the cancer is in the blood stream,Rory will have to have chemo.

Thanks for your help. Rory is ten so Courtney has had his dog a good chunk of her life.

Update on Courtney and Rory,

Courtney was in today and you could see the pain written all over her face. Her beloved Rory begins his chemo treatments next Wednesday. He will have a series of 5 over the next 10 weeks. he will probably lose all his hair and he has hair, not fur. Courtney says the Dr told them that at the most maybe they can prolong his life a year. the chemo is tough because they have to be careful that it doesn't leek or it could destroy his leg or cause bad rashes. I told Courtney not to go there and believe all would be well.. she is still blaming herself that she couldn't get her family to listen to her that Rory needed to go to the vet back in Dec.

this girl has trouble fitting in so this dog is like a lifeline for her and for her depression.

I too, Denise for Courtney's sake, hope rory far exceeds he vets expectations. It is really strange but I had a dream about Rory last night and he had lost some hair but it was shorter and not all gone. The dream was almost like, yes, it was not as bad as everyone thinks.

Even before Rory was sick and diagnosed Courtney told me she can't even think about losing Rory as it is too painful for her. She couldn't even think about Rory dying. I was trying to get her to read the book Merle's door about a dog. A lovely book and she said no, he dies in the book. It is something she has to come to terms with at some point, she will lose Rory, but I can identify as I am finding as Zeus ages that I too think about that sometimes. Our pets are so special in our lives.

I am reading now a book about the messages and inspirations and spiritual encounters with animals. It is a really lovely book. Animals really enrich our lives beyond measure.

Haven't heard from Courtney in awhile but she phoned today and I asked her about Rory. Courtney seemed up beat and she said that Rory has had 2 chemo treatments and has so far only lost a little hair. They don't think the cancer has spread to his blood which sounds very good!
