As many of you know, my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago. You've been sending her energy, and at the beginning of last year, she sounded GREAT when we talked on the phone.

Since then, things have gone downhill. She's living in a rest home. I got an email from my sister (with whom I don't get along; she LOVES to play the martyr, and seems to love spreading bad news) telling me that Mom is now suffering from incontinence problems, and that she doesn't always recognize them when they visit her.

I don't know what to do. I have a strong feeling that Mom, who has always been very fearful and highly suggestible, is mimicking symptoms she has seen in many other patients (she used to work in a hospital). My theory is that stress is strongly linked to what we call Alzheimer's, and as far as I can see, nobody is doing any research in that area.

Mom is receiving the usual "treatment", and it isn't making any difference. I am thousands of miles away, and don't work in any area of medicine. I feel completely lost here, and unable to give her the help I want to give.

Came across some great information on CNN.com. A neurologist diagnosed Alzheimer's disease or possibly Pick's disease. The son said "Something in my gut told me it wasn't right." They took their mother to a geriatrician at the U of Oklahoma for a second opinion.

The geriatrician said "I don't believe your mother has Alzheimer's or Pick's disease. I believe she's overmedicated."

The website lists steps you can take to help doctor tell you wther your older relative is suffering from medication side effects or from an actual disease. Steps listed below:

And, another bit of information... I just picked up the book, "My Stroke of Insight" by Jill Bolte Taylor. If you can find it, just read the last few pages and see you resonate with the info.

The last pages talk about things that are very important for dealing with omeone suffering form any form of brain damage... It is about strokes but I found that as I read the information it was enlightening and informational with regard to the brain in general and how we can work with it. I don't know if this will help you or not. It is so difficult being so far away, especially when you add in a family dynamic!!!

I can tell you a few things about that. Mom was experiencing health problems several years ago, so she wrote down her symptoms and went to the doctor. The doctor told her she was having panic attacks.

So, he prescribed Zoloft. A drug that causes short-term memory loss and aberrant behavior.

Mom never did stop taking it; I don't know if she still is. She is taking Aricept, for all the good it does (which is none).

Really, I think we need a complete revolution in diagnosing and treating what is known as "Alzheimer's" and "dementia". Who's to say that there is no stress link? Why are drugs just thrown at the problem, without looking into the person's psychological history?

That CNN article did say that with people over 65, that any symptom should be looked at as a side effect of medications.

I looked up the drug interaction between Zoloft and Aricept. I didn't know the dosage amount, so I just chose a dosage to get a result. With Zoloft, it's very important to stay away from any alcohol or any product containing alcohol. Another no-no is grapefruit/juice - it strengthens the effect of the Zoloft.
