My husband Frank has been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This means that for unkown reasons the scar forming tissues have set up making scars in his lungs ( a very poor place for this to happen!) I really feel for what is going on for you both right now: my brother received the identical diagnosis of ipf in the spring of 2006. He just got a lung transplant on 22 July of this year. It has been a very challenging journey for him, but I believe the healing intentions and prayers of many on this forum along with all of the friends, family and prayer teams in his circle of support were a great help.

For my brother, the transplant has given him a new lease on life, albeit with small print (some complications along the way, the anti-rejection meds and suppressed immune system). But he is expected to return to his full strength upon completing his 3-month rehab, which is a miracle.

Alfred, thanks for the links to your strings about your brother. how old is your brother ? what did they tell him about prognosis/ likelyhood of recurrence of the scar tissue in the new lungs after transplant ? doesn't mean I'm totally buying it, but we are about to have to decide whether or not to do the transplant, if the docs at UVA decide he is eligible. Age is a factor for Frank, mainly in that if he decided to wait until it was very necessary, he might be "too old" for their guidelines and no longer be eligible.
Hopefully we can get him well before it comes to any of that, but in case....

My brother was 53 when he received the diagnosis and 56 when he underwent transplant surgery. (he had been having misdiagnosed symptoms for almost 2 years he was finally diagnosed, and was told he probably only had a few months left when they did the transplant).

It would be highly unusual (just about unheard of) for pf to reoccur in healthy transplanted lungs.

Yes, the age can be an issue, but I hope that however you decide to move forward, you are supported and facilitated!
