Please help Mr. Biggs. This story I learned today from a friend who's horse narrowly escaped this same fate his sire endured. I just don't understand this behavior..... Thank you so much for your love.

Mr. Biggs arrived at S.T.A.R. Ranch Rescue in Waynesville, NC in June 2009. A beautiful bay Tennessee Walking Horse, Mr. Biggs was trained using cruel and barbaric methods, the result of which is that at the young age of 11 he is crippled and in constant pain.

I wrote STAR Ranch and asked to follow his story. They have already written back and I received this:

I would be happy to do this. I can send you recent photos showing how much better his body build is - ribs not showing, etc. There is also a possible adoption on the horizon. Am working with a gal in Greenville, NC. He needs to find his forever home and this might be it. It is amazing he is even ready to be adopted as I was unsure we would be able to manage his pain without bad side effects. More on that later.

Thank you for all you do. Much of the healing that happens here is beyond the work of our vets....

Horses rely so much on the health of their hooves and legs. These people are absolutely ignorant if they say these devices and "treatments" don't hurt the horses.

I know Jen, it brings tears to my eyes when I think of the chains they have to walk with, just to please the crowds. It is a sickness somewhere along the line some humans became oblivious to. My mind screams "PLEASE WAKE UP!" I can't get too involved in this stuff as a whole because abuse makes me crazy, so I have to take it one soul at a time.

I can barely contain myself knowing of the things that are done to horses to get that artificial high stepping and high head carriage. I can't even stand that 'look' of the artificial movement, wondering which horses did that naturally and which were compelled. There is a group of Walker owners who firmly go with natural and kind methods, but alas not all trainers 'see' horses as feeling beings.

I'd like to ask one of those trainers to put on a pair of platform shoes, a heavy gold anklet on one ankle, and have them go run a mile with a 20lb backpack on their back...then ask them how does that make them feel?

I agree with both of you Holly and Jen! Personally, I'd like to see them let the horses just be horses. To heck with all that fluff. They are amazing beings just as they come to the planet.

Don't get me started on this topic! Many years ago I boarded my quarter horse back east where half the barn were TWs. I couldn't stand the cruelty and the ignorance of the owners who thought I was crazy. Those poor horses wouls slip on wet cement and have no balance. They had to stay in their stalls most of the day because they couldn't run free in a pasture because of the shoes !

I finally had to find another barn because I couldn't stand it anymore.

I received this email from Karen at STAR Ranch and I will try to post the picture:

This is MR. Biggs with one of his admirers. We will all be sad when he goes to his forever home, which looks like this Friday, 11/20. We will drive him to Greenville, NC where a young lady has rescued horses before. She found him on the TWH web, not ours so I know she follows the progress of horses in the show ring. All her recommendations checked out as well.

Mr. Biggs' pain is completely controlled with a small tablet of Previcox each day. He plays with Rusty, the mustang and I know he will be devastated when Mr. Biggs leaves STAR. Along with a lot of humans, too!

But this is what we do. Live for the day he is a whole, happy horse again ready to go to a wonderful home that he should have had all along.

3 more horses came in this week. Thankfully, we got them in time and they will be ok. The beat goes on.
