Last week I was able to put QT to good use when my mother fell and hurt her hip; she phoned me and said 'I've done something rather silly...I've fallen and hurt my hip.' My mother doesn't usually make a fuss about anything - she won't mention she's been ill until she's better! But this time she was really worried; she thought she might have broken her hip at first, it was that painful. Luckily I was only down the road and went straight round. I gave her QT and the pain eased significantly after about 10 minutes. I also suggested she forgive herself for falling, and she actually listened - a minor miracle in itself - and stopped telling herself off!
The hip wasn't broken so there was no point going to hospital, she said. (She's a retired physiotherapist - they're a tough lot!) After the shock and worry subsided - remarkably quickly - during the healing, she was fine. (She did take a paracetemol too.) At first she attributed the easing of the pain just to that but I've given her around 20 - 30 minutes QT each day since - and she's noticed the pain goes for around 2 hours after each session. Her recovery has been pretty good, if not quite miraculous, over the past week, with each day significantly better than the one before; since she's 81 I think that's pretty good going (although she is remarkably fit and active too.) She expected a bruise the size of a dinner plate, but she's had no bruise on her back at all (the first place I worked!) and just a small one on her hip. My mum's not the most relaxed person usually, and very busy, but we've had some nice times this week and I think some much-needed bonding has taken place during our QT sessions! And not just for us two, either; I was boarding a dog, Sugar this week - a lovely Staffie with lots of energy. I was a bit concerned she might jump all over Mum and hurt her, but she was good as gold, and happily joined in the healing sessions! I sat on the sofa next to Mum and Sugar got up next to me, lay across my lap, and put her front paws on Mum's injured leg. The first time I thought it was coincidence of course, but then she started doing deep breathing along with me... In one session, we were both breathing in total unison for a quite few minutes - it was really great and pretty amazing! She joined in three sessions and seemed to enjoy the relaxing vibe alot. Often people injure themselves again while they're in pain and disabled after an injury, and it can be the beginning of a downward spiral, especially for anyone elderly. Thankfully recovery has been really straightforward so far. She's hoping to go back to daily swimming at the end of next week! |
