Here's another example of healing foods and spices. This study is about the ability of turmeric (curcumin is the active ingredient) to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease.

The pigment that gives curry spice its yellow hue may also be able to break up the "plaques" that mark the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients, early research suggests.
Scientists found that curcumin, a component of the yellow curry spice turmeric, was able to reduce deposits of beta-amyloid proteins in the brains of elderly lab mice that ate curcumin as part of their diets.
In addition, when the researchers added low doses of curcumin to human beta-amyloid proteins in a test tube, the compound kept the proteins from aggregating and blocked the formation of the amyloid fibers that make up Alzheimer's plaques.
The new findings suggest that curcumin could be capable of both treating Alzheimer's and lowering a person's risk of developing the disease, said study co-author Dr. Gregory M. Cole of the University of California Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.
Cole and his colleagues have gotten funding to begin a small trial in humans suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
The current findings, published online recently by the Journal of Biological Chemistry, add to the body of research pointing to curcumin's medicinal value.
Long used as part of traditional Indian medicine, curcumin is now under study as a potential cancer therapy, and animal research has suggested the compound might serve as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis.
Curcumin is structurally similar to a stain known as Congo red, which is used by pathologists to identify amyloid protein in autopsied brain tissue in order to confirm a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease after a patient's death.
Curcumin can also stain amyloid deposits, Cole said, but it has the additional ability, when eaten or injected, to cross into a living animal's brain and bind to amyloid deposits.

Cool

The free interpretation of the description would just create another offtopic forum ... to keep things organized I prefer QT stuff here and the rest in off topic.

thanks

Pinky, this is a very interesting article. It's just great to find remedies for conditions, and especially when it's as easy and safe to do as consuming more curry. I really appreciate your sharing this.

You know, I have read that 70% of Altzheimer patients could cure themselves of this illness by drinking more water for as they say one of the problems of Altzheimer is that the brain dries out.

I found this posted at an earlier post from Wendy

Hi Daybreak,
Just read Mercola and in his last newsletter he speaks about Curry

He writes about Tumuric and Curcuma
Which Type of Turmeric is Best?

For use in cooking, choose a pure turmeric powder, rather than a curry powder. At least one study has found that curry powders tend to contain very little curcumin, compared to turmeric powder. Turmeric is also available in supplement form and for many this is a more convenient method to obtain these health benefits discussed above, especially if they are from a high-quality organic source and if one doesn’t particularly enjoy the taste of curry.

Vitamins slow dementia and Alzheimer's

If you or a loved one has dementia, I've got great news. There's now proof that a group of inexpensive vitamins can slow the progression of dementia and Alzheimer's.

A recent study followed 299 older men. The researchers found that taking B-vitamin supplements significantly lowered the amyloid beta protein in their brains. The protein is a hallmark of Alzheimer's. Those taking the placebo saw their plasma protein increase an undesirable 18.5%. Those taking B vitamins saw their amyloid beta protein rise only 4.9%. That's a huge difference for inexpensive B vitamins.

This study looked at plasma protein and not brain deposits. So there's not a direct connection to Alzheimer's. However, most experts agree that any beta amyloid protein is bad. So the results of this study are significant.

In this study, the doses of vitamins were: folic acid - 2 mg, vitamin B6 - 25 mg, and vitamin B12 - 400 mcg. The participants took these dosages for two years.
But protection from Alzheimer's and dementia is only the beginning of the B vitamins' protection. A second study showed that low levels of vitamins B12 and folate are associated with a higher risk of stroke. In fact, if you are low in both, your risk doubles.

Any way you slice it, there are good reasons to routinely take B-vitamin supplements, especially if you're over 50 years old. As we age, our ability to absorb these vitamins wanes. And with the decreasing richness of our soils, vitamin/mineral supplements can fill in gaps. You will find enough of each of these B vitamins in (Sorry, This is a link you can not open, P) 'Advanced Bionutritionals' Healthy Resolve .

Yours for better health and medical freedom,
Dr. Robert J. Rowen
